Local Find: Cutlass Grille Brings Jamaica to Chesapeake

Right across the street from Chesapeake General Regional Hospital there is a slice of Jamaica in Chesapeake. Cutlass Grille specializes in Jamaican jerk-style barbecue. Jerk cooking is a style native to Jamaica where meat is marinated or dry rubbed using a combination of spices.

The decor of the restaurant feels like an island paradise, with bright colors and lots of fun art work. There is a full-service bar with some pretty interesting island drink suggestions, including Kola Champagne and Ting. Owner Shawn Dawkins started Cutlass Grille after being laid off and it has grown into a popular destination for island food. Everything is prepared fresh daily and sometimes they run out of popular items.

One of the many jerk offerings from Cutlass Grille, Jerk Pork with their delicious green beans and plantains.

At Cutlass Grille there is a variety of meat that is cooked Jerk style including chicken, pork, and brisket. We sampled the brisket in the Chopped Beef Brisket sandwich. The sandwich was delicious, and wasn’t too spicy.  We were also able to enjoy the Jerk Chicken. Another treat was the Brown Stew Chicken which was so tender it fell off the bone. The Curry Chicken was also a favorite, it is a mild yellow curry with tender chicken and vegetables like carrots and potatoes stewed together.

All of the meals are served with a choice of sides. Some of the table’s favorites included the collard greens (a little bit spicy but really good), the fried tostones (smashed plantains that are fried), and the Jamaican rice and peas.

Tostones are flattened plantains that are fried. Delicious.

We finished the meal with a little desert – carrot cake that was so moist but wasn’t too sweet, and plantain foster – a play on the classic bananas foster. Both were excellent.
